GM To Get 5G Upgrade For 2024
Currently, General Motors vehicles are equipped with the OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity. This breakthrough technology enables up to seven devices to be connected inside the vehicle, using AT&T’s 4G network on the road.
In the mobile world, 4G is now considered “old technology.” That is why you will see newer GM vehicles get a data upgrade to 5G – the fifth-generation cellular network architecture – through AT&T.
Upgrading to 5G increases bandwidth between the vehicle and the available cellular network. With the addition of autonomous vehicle technology and the increase in electric mobility, greater bandwidth will be beneficial to enable a GM vehicle to utilize these technologies through better connectivity to enable key functions to work seamlessly.
With the upgrade to 5G connectivity, enhancements to the network will include:
- Improved roadway-centric coverage
- Faster music and video downloads with higher quality
- Faster, more reliable, and secure over-the-air software updates
- Faster navigation, mapping, and voice services
The roll-out of 5G connectivity on GM vehicles will start for the 2024 model year. However, owners of 2019 and newer GM vehicles with 4G LTE capabilities will experience faster connectivity speeds and many of the same performance benefits of future 5G-equipped vehicles. The upgrade will happen when the new network infrastructure becomes available to these vehicles.
AT&T has the nation’s most reliable 5G network, covering more than 250 million people across the country. From 2016 to 2020, AT&T invested more than $110 billion in its wireless and wireline networks, including capital investments and acquisitions of wireless spectrum and operations.
GM offers OnStar and Connected Services to more than 16 million customers in the U.S. and Canada. Since the launch of 4G LTE in 2014, GM owners have used more than 171 million gigabytes of data across its brands, which is equivalent to nearly 5.7 billion hours of music streamed or more than 716 million hours of streaming video.
To support GM’s rapid innovation and delivery of next-generation connected vehicle solutions, AT&T and Microsoft are bringing together the speed and reliability of AT&T’s 5G network with Microsoft’s scalable and secure cloud services.
